GUIDE: Steps to fix a corrupt SD Card via Chkdsk

Almost every device has SD cards to store images, movies, music, documents and other content. But it is sad to say that when this storage media gets corrupted, damaged or goes into the unreadable state can lead to many problems. There may be many programs or applications that are designed to recover and restore the lost data.


Data loss after corruption in SD card is very common. To resolve this corruption issue using a data recovery tool should be your second choice. Why second? Second because your first choice must be chkdsk command.
Note: chkdsk don’t guarantee full recovery in your corrupted SD card, but worth giving a try.

If you have a windows computer then this step is worth doing.

Learn how to use chkdsk to fix a corrupted SD card:


1.  Plug in your corrupted SD card into your system with the help card reader or USB cable.
Make sure your SD card is not write-protected as it prevent your computer from accessing the contents present on your card.
Once you have inserted your memory card into your computer, you will find a pop-up windows asking you to open your card contents or to transfer any files. Just close just window.
PRO TIP: If you don’t want to get into this then you can give a try to Card Data Recovery Tool that is capable of removing and restoring your corrupt or missing files.



Now click start on your   Windows taskbar, and open “Computer.”  Look for your SD card under “Devices with Removable Storage” and note down the drive letter assigned to it. You will need this information in chkdsk program.





2. On your system, hit on Start and type “cmd” on “Search programs and files” in the box.
3. Right-click on “cmd” under the Programs and select “Run as administrator”. It will open a command window which will let you run chkdsk and fix your corrupted SD card. The window will look something like this.





On the command window type “chkdsk /X /f sd card letter:” or “chkdsk sd card letter: /f “, for example,”chkdsk /X /f G:” or “chkdsk h: /f
Now press Enter and chkdsk program will start checking your corrupted SD card.

This process can take few minutes, depending on the size of the storage media and the amount of corruption. Once the chkdsk program is done checking your SD card it will prompt you to save the lost data. Click Yes to let chkdsk display all the lost data files repaired by it.

4. Open your Computer by clicking Start menu present on your Windows taskbar. Now hit on the assigned drive letter. All the repaired files will be visible to you. Easily access them on your SD card.
